2005 Mudgee SSAA
City vs Country

    Combined Services Discipline Match

The 2005 Mudgee City vs Country started on Friday the 18th of March under very dark clouds and terrible weather but that did not stop nine, Class 1 and two, Class 2 pistol shooters from stepping up to a very wet and windy firing line. After a very demanding shoot due to weather which included the 3 Range Core, 3 Positional and the 25m Rapid Fire match, Rob Irving from Bowral and Terry Lark from Bathurst stood out from the rest of the field breaking the 600 point mark. Rob Irving took out both Class 1 and 2 trophies with Terry Lark runner up in Class1 and Sydney's Kerry Benson runner up in Class 2. With more competitors arriving as the weather appeared to ease attention moved to the Rifle Range for the .310 Martini Cadet shoot. It looked like it was going to be a Rob Irving victory until an error in the 75m match costed him the trophy which was awarded to Fred Meyer with 269pts followed by Rob Irving with 245pts and third, John Lewis with 239pts. With rifle zeroing under way the organisers attention turn to the unknown number of shooters awaiting them on the Saturday.

Saturday awoke shooters with a wonderful ray of sunshine and a very clear day. By 7:30am, shooters started arriving and the numbers just kept growing. By 8:30am, 38 shooters had registered and with a very hearty, "Good Morning Rebels" the 2005 Mudgee City vs Country was underway. The number of shooters was announced and this was met with a mighty cheer and applause from shooters. The shooters were informed of which rules were to be applied and a cheer went up again. The Rapid Fire B rule was explained and no one mentioned a word. A question was raised about power factor and bullet weight and it was explained that the onus was on the competitor to comply and with that, no one mentioned the issue again. This was the rules we voted on.

Country's Tim Hayes with a score of 46.2 took the 300m Deliberate. The 3 P Core Event was taken out by Silverdale's Carlos Herreros with a Grand Master score of 147.12 followed by country's Ben Doherty with 143.13 that was won on a shoot off with Mudgee's Tim Hayes. The winner of the third year running of the "Noel Cross Memorial Trophy" (metallic silhouette), which is a fantastic shoot to compete in or just watch, was Sydney's Jeff Genn with a great score of 81, and boy was he happy. In the juniors, Mudgee's Rob Prowse set the early pace and was hard to catch all day, and now will have to clear out some space for his many and well deserved trophies. Well Done Rob. The Top Six AGG scores for the day were split down the middle with 3 country and 3 city competitors. Mudgee's Tim Hayes stood out with 366.23 followed by Silverdale's Carlos Herreros with 363.17. Well Done Tim. Sadly after the scores were tallied City with Carlos Herreros, Rob Irving, Jeff Genn, Fred Meyer, John Lewis and Marcus O'Dean had 2018.74pts and Country with Tim Hayes, Wayne Cole, Ben Doherty, Andrew Prowse, James McRae and Dave Toovey had 1996.99pts. When this was announced the roof of the shed near lifted off with cheers and applause. City had after some years defeated Country. Well Done City. I would also like to thank all the scorers, standout Pete Pitchford, range officers, Dave Toovey who run the silhouette range all day and of course Tom "the Boss" who catered for us on both Saturday and Sunday. The evening dinner was very well attended and the atmosphere had something that the City vs Country had been lacking for some time. Friendship.

By the looks of it the past few months had caught up on the "Mudgee Rebels" who were last seen playing UNO and drinking coffee to the wee hours. Something was wrong with that picture.

Sunday awoke the many campers to once again, sunshine and a clear day for the Modified matches. 28 shooters registered for the matches which saw standard rifles shoot beside modified rifles in a course of fire of a 3P Core and Action M. The 3P match was taken out by Mudgee's Wayne Cole using a modified SMLE, of course, and scored 146.15. Runner up was Ben Doherty using a standard No5 Carbine with a top score of 143.11. The Action M was hotly contested with only one point and a narrow centre count in the top three but Mudgee's Dave Toovey with a score of 49.4 held of Jeremy Bates with 48.5. The Sunday Agg was taken out by Mudgee's Wayne Cole with 192.19 and was closely followed by Ben Doherty with 191.14. In the juniors once again Rob Prowse stood out from the pack but a special mention should also go to Sarah Spittles who competed in her first big match on her home range. Well done to our younger shooters Rob Prowse, Chris Cross, Ross Spittles and Sarah Spittles.

This years City vs Country was the friendliest match I had seen for some time with plenty of positive feedback and support for Mudgee in the future. The one comment that did stick out in my mind was, "This was like the City vs Country of old". To all the competitors and sponsors and volunteers who put this weekend together a very big thanks and we hope to all see all you next year at the original and the best, Mudgee City vs Country.
